Waarom deze variant

Kies deze als

2 free drive bay(s), 3 free PCIe slot(s) and 0 free RAM slot(s) keep the upgrade path open for years.

Wat het opoffert

Higher upfront cost today — you pay for expansion capacity before you need it.

Hoe de onderdelen zijn gekozen

Intel Core Ultra 5 250K Plus: 18 cores / 18 threads covers the 8 cores needed with headroom. (2.3× needed — chosen for future expansion)
Motherboard Intel Z890 (LGA 1851): matches the CPU socket and case size.
RAM: 32GB DDR5 — meets the 32GB the workload requires.

Waarom niet de andere

Long-term build — expandable & future-proof beats "Smart build — best all-round" on performance +25, value -7, efficiency +11, expandability -11, longevity +12 — that is why it is recommended for your priorities.

Sterke toekomstbestendigheid

74/100

Strong future-proofing (74/100) — this build should stay relevant for years without major surgery.

Upgrade path75

DIY build — the CPU, motherboard and PSU can each be upgraded independently without replacing the whole system.

Expansion100

Expansion headroom: 3 PCIe slot(s), 5 M.2, 1 SATA, 2 drive bay(s), 0 RAM slot(s) free.

Storage growth70

Storage is 72% utilized with 2 free drive bay(s) and 1 free SATA port(s).

Memory growth20

0 RAM slot(s) free; memory is 100% utilized.

Networking95

Networking is 10000 Mbps, and a free PCIe slot can add a faster NIC later.

Replacement ease90

ATX form factor with standard, socketed components — most parts are easy to replace.

Workload change70

No GPU (the iGPU handles transcoding), but there is room (3 PCIe slot(s), PSU headroom 3.6x) to add one for AI.

Homelab Risk Score

Laag risico

10/100

Low risk (10/100) — sensible redundancy and headroom; no single point of failure is exposed.

low

Single point of failure

Storage has redundancy (parity1) — a single drive failure does not take the array down.Oplossing: Continue a 3-2-1 backup strategy; redundancy is not a backup.

low

Storage risk

5 NAS-rated hard drive(s) — rated for 24/7 operation.Oplossing: Keep drives cool and monitor SMART health.

low

Data loss risk

Redundancy protects against drive failure, though it is not a substitute for backups.Oplossing: Follow a 3-2-1 backup rule: at least one copy off the box.

low

Power risk

PSU is 650W, peak load 180W (28%).Oplossing: PSU sizing leaves healthy headroom for spikes and future parts.

low

Network risk

Single 10000 Mbps NIC — a switch/port failure takes the box fully offline, and multi-user media can saturate 10000 Mbps.Oplossing: Consider a second NIC or a managed switch; for heavy media, plan for 2.5/10G before the build.

low

Expansion risk

3 PCIe, 5 M.2, 1 SATA, 2 bays free.Oplossing: Healthy room for future drives, NICs and accelerators.

low

Upgrade risk

2026 platform — current generation with a forward-looking socket/feature set.Oplossing: Buy for the workload, not the socket — upgrade paths are a bonus, not a guarantee.

Laatste build-audit

Audit passed (0 critical, 0 warning) — mostly optional and future considerations remain.

2 Optioneel2 Toekomst

Optioneel

Add a UPS

An always-on server holding data should survive power blips.Actie: Add a line-interactive UPS sized for the build's peak draw (≥ 10 min at typical load for a clean shutdown).power

Optioneel

Keep a backup off-box

Redundancy inside the box does not survive fire, theft or a whole-array fault.Actie: Mirror the important data to an external drive, a second box, or cloud.storage

Toekomst

Drive bays remain

2 drive bay(s) free for future capacity.Actie: Expand capacity in pairs (mirror/parity) when needed.storage

Toekomst

PCIe slot available

3 free PCIe slot(s) for a NIC, HBA or GPU later.Actie: Use it for a 10G NIC, extra HBA, or an accelerator when the need appears.expansion

Wat de limiet wordt

RAM is maxed out is the most likely thing to date this build within 1-2y.

1-2y

RAM is maxed out

Waarom: All RAM slots are used and the workload already sits at 100% — the next memory need means replacing kits or a new build.Wat te doen: Buy a single larger kit now, or plan the RAM for the full lifecycle.

3-5y

Storage growing

Waarom: 72% of capacity in use — comfortable today, tighter over a few years.Wat te doen: Plan the growth curve; keep at least one bay free for the next drive.
